3 Situations When You May Need Hand Physiotherapy

Your hands are two of the most important parts of your body. If you are like most people, you will use your hands and fingers for just about every task you attempt throughout the day. Therefore, when you are dealing with a hand injury, getting back to full function as quickly as possible is always important.

When you have dealt with an injury to one or both of your hands or had an illness that has affected your hand and finger function, hand physiotherapy may be recommended. Take a look at a few situations that may spur a doctor to recommend hand physiotherapy treatment.

You Struggle With Dexterity or Fine Finger Skills

The hand is one of the most complex parts of the human body with a vast collection of nerves, tendons, joints, and muscles. All of these work together with your neural system to help you achieve skills that require unique movements and flexion. Occasionally, a disruption due to an injury in one of the areas of the hand will change how well your hand and fingers function in terms of performing small tasks. You may need hand physiotherapy if you struggle to:

  • Button the buttons on your clothing
  • Pick up writing instruments and write
  • Use eating utensils effectively
  • Pick up items with your thumb and pointer finger

You Have Issues With Tingling and Numbness in Your Hands and Fingers

Tingles and numbness in your hands and fingers can impede your ability to use your hands and rely on them to complete general activities. For example, it can be difficult to maintain your grip on a shopping bag or hold onto your purse if your fingers go numb. Typically, these sensations are caused by nerve damage, which can be the result of a hand injury.

You Suffer From Joint Stiffness in Your Hands That Limits Your Range of Motion

If you struggle with conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, joint stiffness can be a major issue. If you get into hand physiotherapy early on, however, you may see some improvement in your range of motion. The hand has over a dozen joints. If just a few of these junctures are not performing properly, it can get in the way of functionality. For example, if your middle fingers will not bend, this can make it difficult to type on a keyboard or grasp an object firmly enough to hold it.
